In the last 15 years, through all our Pilates instructor training courses both in New York City and abroad, we get asked the same questions over and over. Here is a nice recap we put together to make it easier for you when approaching Pilates teacher training and certification schools near you.
Pilates Instructor Training Prerequisites
Most Pilates teacher training programs require a minimum of classes and sessions you must have under your belt BEFORE the start of any certification course. So it’s important to know beforehand what the requirements are and if the timing will work out. Also be sure to ask the studio where you plan on taking courses if they offer a special prerequisite package to help you on the path. Usually these are deducted substantially and are a GREAT option to partake in. At core we also accept previous training and sessions from other studios upon approval.
Certificate of Training Versus Certification
Most Instructor Training courses offer a certificate of training. A certification is only given if a third party administers it. The PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) offers professionals a certification if they sit down for an exam administered by them. While it’s a great credential to have and to support the PMA it’s not mandatory to be a teacher and make a living off of your training.
Hidden Fees in Instructor Training Courses
Need to retest at any given time? Go over the required duration of the course? Sometimes there are additional fees attached. Pilates teacher training programs are not cheap and are lengthy so be sure you read the fine print of any studio you might be interested in. Mandatory training packages and fees for manuals are sometimes NOT included in the hefty tuition cost. So be sure to ask so you aren’t surprised.
Teacher Training: Classical Versus Contemporary
Oh Pilates! We wish it was easy navigating the varying styles out there. Most educational facilities approach their teacher training programs in one of 2 ways. Either by presenting the authentic or classical Method which has come to be known as the purest form that Joseph Pilates himself taught. We believe this is the most valuable approach as it gives a very solid foundation. However with more gyms and hybrid-style studios popping up everywhere there is now tons of options for instructor training that is more contemporary. Be sure to ask about the curriculum and if the course study and apprenticeship adheres more toward one or the other.
Instructor Training Payment Plans and Workstudy
Cost is a factor. No doubt about it. Most reputable Pilates teacher training programs cost upwards of $5,000 for a comprehensive program. To help with cost some (not all) allow a payment plan after making a deposit to secure your place in the program. At core we have implemented a workstudy option. We allow 3 students to pay half of the tuition upfront and then have the ability to work off the other half in the studio. Depending on your time, it’s a great option. These spots are usually very competitive so it’s best to act early if you need the financial help for your teacher training program.
