What is Pilates and who is this Joe person I keep hearing about?
Joseph Pilates created his “Art of Contrology” in the early 1900’s in Germany and brought his system of exercise to New York City in the 1920’s.
Pilates, named for its master, is a system of exercises that seeks to develop core strength and stability and spinal health by integrating mat work with various pieces of apparatus designed with spring resistance. Guided by six fundamental principles – breath, concentration, control, centering, flow, and precision – the Pilates Method is most commonly seen in group mat classes or in private sessions with a certified Pilates instructor.
Is Pilates effective for weight loss?
People turn to Pilates to achieve that “Pilates body “ – toned muscles, ballet-like posture and weight loss. The lean muscle mass achieved through Pilates and the breathing required in the exercises increases metabolism, cell regeneration and circulation which all contribute to weight loss. As with any exercise program, self-esteem is boosted significantly thus lending to smarter lifestyle choices in every realm. Aerobic activity combined with the strength training component of a Pilates workout is the best way to achieve weight loss goals.
What kind of results can I expect from doing Pilates?
Longer, leaner muscles without the bulk
Flattens abdominal wall; cinches the waistline
Improved posture, balance, coordination and overall body awareness
Stronger core and more stable back and spine
Increased athletic performance in almost any sport – triathlons, horseback riding, golf, skiing…
A good time – especially when utilizing the apparatus in a private session format
Increased sex drive
Boosted self esteem
The Reformer? Guillotine? Cadillac? Huh?
No Pilates is not based on some sci-fi action flick involving vintage cars and severed heads… and yes there are special pieces of apparatus that make Pilates intelligent, fun and always challenging.
Most widely used in any Pilates workout is the Reformer. Lie on the moving carriage and so begins the journey of spring resistance, straps and bars. The Cadillac is a larger apparatus that includes a trapeze, springs, bars and canopy. Rounding out the collection is the all-time favorite Wunda Chair, Ped-i-Pull, Barrels, Tower, Guillotine, Foot Corrector, Sandbag, and a handful of smaller props. Most studios are fully equipped with high grade studio apparatus while there are manufacturers that tailor apparatus for at-home use.
Pilates Apparatus versus Pilates mat?
They come head to head in popularity and effectiveness but in terms of price and availability Mat classes take the prize – cheaper and offered everywhere from gyms to internet downloads and can be conveniently done anywhere. You will see incredible results with just mat work but with the added spring resistance of the apparatus, the outer limbs get more toned more quickly and the apparatus adds variety and aids with alignment. They were initially built to help with free form mat work afterall – the foundation of the Method! We suggest a dose of the classical approach – mix it up for best results and in any given private session both repertoires are usually integrated.
Why use springs for resistance – what gives?
Springs provide gradual resistance as your muscles contract, which ensures the muscles are being worked properly. Weights can often be hard on the joints and ligaments while the spring resistance in Pilates works with less stress.
Only few repetitions? Why so little?
One of the founding principles of the Method is precision. Translation: quality over quantity. If you are concentrated and mentally engaged with each movement you will get the maximum benefit out of every move you make. Pilates was also designed as a flowing system of movements from one exercise to the next. The Method intends to deliver a holistic system of exercises to the entire body rather than over-developing any one set of muscles and, let’s face it, under-developing the mind that comes with mindless multiple repetitions.
Is Pilates like yoga and what are the main differences?
They are similar in that they both require the mind-body to be connected and emphasize deep, coordinated breathing to facilitate movements. Yoga is achieved through static postures while Pilates is a flowing system of connected movements that often incorporate the spring resistance of specific Pilates apparatus. The main difference however is yoga’s subscription to a lifestyle – meditation, prayer, and belief are very much a part of the yogic tradition and while Pilates lends itself to healthier lifestyle choices, it is primarily fitness based.
Will I get taller through Pilates?
Your spine is your spine. Plain and simple. It will not get longer. But posture is greatly improved through Pilates thanks to its intense work on strengthening and stabilizing core and back muscles. Better posture can easily transform bodies into a more taller, graceful one.
I have a bad back and/or am not flexible. Will I be able to do Pilates?
Yes and YES. Pilates doesn’t require you to be in any “shape” beforehand. In fact it is miraculous for helping most back pain and will greatly improve flexibility for even the most stubborn backs and hamstrings. Pilates wants you just as you are. That being said, if you are overcoming back injury it is recommended to work with a certified instructor in private sessions to ensure you get the necessary modifications and improvements are monitored.
Are there cardio benefits to Pilates and can Pilates be my only workout?
The Method strives for fluidity of movement which means that once you are precise with the exercises that things really start flowing thus elevating the heart rate. Pilates works the body holistically both strengthening and stretching muscles for optimal results. It can be your only workout but if you are truly seeking weight loss, as with other strength training methods, it should be combined with a regular aerobic routine as well.
How often should I take Pilates sessions or classes?
We suggest 3 Pilates workouts per week – any combination of private sessions and/or group mat or apparatus classes. People often become hooked to the Method and its aesthetic result and usually up the amount of sessions per week.
What should I wear for Pilates?
No shoes required. Be comfortable. Wear socks and workout clothes. Snug tops are preferred so the instructor can better see core engagement.
Is it safe to do Pilates during pregnancy?
During a healthy pregnancy, Pilates is safe for the mom and baby and helps circulation, low back pain and self esteem. We require a doctor’s note to ensure all is well and our instructors customize the workouts to accommodate the changes that take place through the trimesters.
