Overview

For most students wanting to pursue a career as a Pilates instructor, learning the foundation of the Method through the matwork is the first step. Our Mat Training Course provides the most extensive mat education delivering both beginner and intermediate exercises in one course. Or students can choose our level-based courses as they decide which career path is right for them.  No springs, straps or bars necessary to make for a challenging workout. In fact a major benefit to Pilates mat and teaching it is the fact that it can be practiced or taught anywhere. From dvd’s, podcasts, smart phone apps, to traditional group class settings in fitness centers and studios the options are limitless for instructors and clients alike.

For each exercise in the mat repertoire, our courses provide modifications to simplify and modifications to challenge the corresponding exercises lending to a vast array of options to keep the Method alive and individualized for each client and class.

Foundation

It’s the abc’s and 123’s of Pilates. The mat work is the basis upon which all else in the Pilates system rests. Understanding the significance of this foundation; what’s required of the body in mat work and how it differs from working on the apparatus, is the first step toward building a career as a Pilates instructor.

Commitment

Without needing to commit to an in-depth comprehensive apprenticeship, students experience what it means to teach classical Pilates mat in less than 2 weeks. Before You Begin

Complete 10 – 15 hours of Pilates Mat instruction at Core Pilates NYC.

If the classes have been taken at another studio, students will be asked to submit a log of classes taken or a letter of reference from a certified Pilates teacher.

What to Expect

The Mat Training Course integrates both beginner mat AND intermediate mat exercises together in one course. Over the course of 2 weekends and 32 hours, students will become fluent in teaching over 30 Pilates mat exercises, the classical Pilates beginner and intermediate mat sequence, as well as innovative modifications to challenge or simplify each exercise according to varying fitness levels or common injuries.

Weekend 1

Beginner level Mat instruction: Learn the entire beginner mat sequence

Exams:  30-minute practical test on beginner level sequence. Take home written exam.

Apprenticeship:  During the week between the two training weekends and one week after, the studio is available to students for observation of classes and practice time as part of an optional apprenticeship.

Weekend 2

Intermediate level Mat instruction: Learn the entire intermediate mat sequence.

Exams:  30-minute practical test on intermediate level sequence. Take home written exam.

Anatomy in Clay®:  2-hour live course. Build bones and basic muscles, abdominals and spine with colored clay.

Cost

$1050 and includes:

Personal login to the CPNYC online education platform for video manuals, written manuals, reference exercise videos and anatomy videos. PDF downloadable manuals.

Anatomy in Clay® workshop, exam fees (re-tests result in an additional fee), CPNYC Pilates Mat,  optional apprenticeship, professional tools and guidance for post-course job acquisition, ACE & NASM credits (3.4 ACE, 3.2 NASM)

The Beginner Level Mat Course introduces the foundation of Joseph Pilates’ Method – The Mat Work. This course is ideal for students interested in tasting what it means to teach the principles with impact and stand-out style to individuals or group classes. Over 19 hours of instruction including our Anatomy in Clay® workshop are presented in this course.

Complete CPNYC’s Beginner Level Mat Course or an equivalent course at another training center.  Proof of successful completion of prior courses will be required.

The principles at play within the Intermediate level mat repertoire are explored at a deeper level within this course in addition to learning, teaching and practicing the new exercises introduced. Proper cueing and the importance of transitions are discussed and practiced, and teaching you how to deliver a dynamic class with flow and precision is a key focus.

The Weekend

Intermediate level Mat instruction:  Learn the entire intermediate mat order and how to challenge the beginner level exercises.

Exams: 30-minute practical test on intermediate level sequence. Take home written exam.

Apprenticeship: During the week after the course, the studio is available to students for observation of classes and practice time as part of an optional apprenticeship.

Anatomy in Clay®: 2-hour live course. Build the bones and basic muscles, abdominals and spine using colored clay.
