What kind of bagel do you like and how do you prefer to “dress” it?
I’m generally a whole wheat bagel kind of girl. I like cream cheese, butter, or peanut butter on top.
What’s your favorite exercise to teach and do you have a special spin to it?
I love teaching Pull Up and Twist on the chair, mostly because of the “a-ha” moment on a client’s face when they finally get it!
If Joseph Pilates were alive today, what would you ask him?
I’d probably ask him what he thought about all of the different approaches to Pilates these days. Does he think it adds to the Method by broadening its appeal? Or does it bother him that people have “reinterpreted” his work?
Top 3 places you’ve traveled?
China (Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong), Italy (Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre), Poland (Warsaw, Krakow)
Top 3 things on your “To Do Before You Die” list?
Write a book. Travel to every continent at least once (preferably many times each). Be fluent in Italian, French, and Spanish.
What’s the farthest point from the Core studio (or NYC) that you’ve done Pilates?
Seattle. That’s where I first started practicing Pilates, back in 1997.
What’s your Pilates “a-ha” moment?
When I finally figured out how to do Pull Up on the Chair (probably why I love teaching it so much). Ask Jo D’Agostino (another Core Pilates instructor) – she witnessed most of the whining in the weeks leading up to the big moment.
Two words that describe your teaching style?
Playful and intense. The same words I use to describe my personality in general.
Favorite type of sessions or classes to teach and why?
I love teaching Tower classes. They’re small enough to feel personal and big enough to be a lot of fun with a good mix of people. Doesn’t hurt that the Tower is my favorite piece of Pilates apparatus to work out on myself!
Care to share any teaching blunders?
Too many to count, I’m sure; but I haven’t killed anyone yet! I’d say they usually consist of the occasional addition/subtraction of a spring on the Reformer or something stupid like calling someone’s knee their shoulder or vice versa.
Where can we find you on any given Friday eve?
Honestly? In my apartment, relaxing in my pajamas. Super exciting, right?
Pilates Class Gone “Mad”
The first time I taught a group Pilates mat class, I felt like I was going to (expletive verb) bugger off. I asked the (adj) fabulous class, if anybody was new to Pilates and they had all been taking class for (number) 2.3 years. After I found out how long the (adj) warm class had done (adj) subtle Pilates, I had to throw my plan out the (adj) intensive door! Their Hundred looked like (noun) kangaroossmashing gone wild, and their Teaser was (adj ending in ing) .
(exclamation!) Yikes! Someone (verb) flapped which made the class go wild. (body part plural) Feet were (verb ending in ing) running like (animal) horses everywhere. And I only had (number) 4 seconds to get the class to Seal. You could see the sweat through my (article of clothing) tube top! In the end, my (adj) silly class left feeling (adj ending in er) faster, and I feel (positive emotion) joy to be a Pilates instructor. So, sign up now for my (exclamation!) Yay class!
